In Ontario, when you team rope you are assessed a number from a 1 to a 3.
A# 1 is a beginner. A# 3 is skilled team roper. A# 2 is everyone in-between.
You must be a member of the RAO or have purchased a day permit to rope at a sanctioned (approved) RAO Roping Event. A sanctioned RAO Event follows the Rules and Guidelines set out by the Official Rule Book of the RAO. The RAO sanctions ropings for points for its members. The points are attained by qualifying runs for which, the top 6 placements, are rewarded. First, being the fastest qualified time. To calculate, you take the total number of paid entries in that specific event times(x)6, for first/ x5, for2nd/ x4for 3rd/ x3for 4th /x2for 5th/ x1for 6th. Specific example: if there are 10 ropers, 1st receives 60 points; 2nd receives 50 points; 3rd receives 40 points; 4th receives 30 points; 5th receives 20 points; 6th receives 10 points. You receive points per Go and points per Average (AVE) determined by the type of roping which you have entered in. The points attained by each roper at each sanctioned event are tallied, consecutively and recorded for one whole season.
There are two types of systems that can have sanctioned ropings.
1- There are OPEN Team Ropings, TRO, which are open to everyone, all numbers.
There are numbered ropings which restrict the entry to specific terms. There are #4 Team Ropings, TR4, which restrict entry numbers to total 4, meaning that the numbers of the two partners roping together as a team can’t exceed the total of 4. (1+1, 1+2, 1+3, 2+2). There can be other numbered ropings as determined by the Board/General Meeting.
In an Open or Numbered Format, there is a traditional system of 1,2,3,or more, Go’s, and an Average (AVE). There has to be a minimum of 2 Go’s.
You can enter a maximum of two times in a particular Go by either heading in two Go’s or heeling in 2 Go’s. Or, you can have the same partner but you must switch ends in the Go (you can head once and heel once, making 2 runs, with your same partner). After entries are closed, no one else can join in. The roping starts. You compete in the number of Go’s advertised for that particular roping. The times of each catch, plus any assessed penalties are totaled per Go. The number of Go times are totaled for the Average (AVE). So, there are points from 1st to 6th placing of each Go plus from 1st to 6th placing in the AVE. Example: If there are 10 ropers, (see above example), and you placed 1st in all 3 Go’s, you would also be 1st in the AVE, so you would have an accumulated 60 points for each of 3 Go’s and 60 points for the AVE for a grand total of 240 points for that specific event. There may be more than 1 event in a day, so, if you enter another and make qualifying runs and therefore points per Go and/or AVE, you will increase your point total for the day. The payout money is determined by that Event’s Producer, within guidelines as set out in the RAO Rule Book, and is the responsibility of the Producer and Day Secretary.
2- There are multiple head ropings, called Round Robins. They are Open
ropings and can have any number of entries for the 1st Go as long as
none are duplicated. Producers may advertise a restriction on the number of
partners that a header can have based on the number and availability of stock.
In a Round Robin the entries do not have to close when the roping has started.
Those teams who catch and a time is recorded on the time sheets, progress on to
the next Go. Those teams who don’t catch are eliminated. This
progression/elimination repeats for each Go. Those who keep catching, keep
moving on to the next Go. Their times are added together to carry an Average
(AVE). Points are determined for the top 6 placements by the total number of
teams in the last Go. For example: if there are 10 teams in the last Go, the
points would be, (as above), 1st-60, 2nd-50, 3rd-40,
4th-30, 5th-20, 6th-10. Payout is also at the
discretion of the Producer, within guidelines set out by the RAO Rule Book, and
the responsibility of both Producer and Day Secretary.
